A Letter from our Principal

Hello West Valley Families,

I am pleased to announce that as of 8:00am this morning (April 20th) ALL WVHS classes have gone live online through the Google Classroom platform. Students will be able to continue working in each of their classes, moving through the curriculum. Teachers will be updating their classes weekly (by 8:00am each Monday morning) with assignments and learning for the week. Students should expect to spend no more than 30 minutes of time, for each of their classes daily. The WVHS Staff have been hard at work collaborating around curriculum and building their Google Classrooms to do their very best to replicate the learning that would have taken place in their traditional classrooms. Each staff member's experience with virtual classrooms is different....some are very well versed and others are learning as they go. No matter the experience level, each staff member will continue to learn and grow so each and every WVHS student receives the best education possible. We know that absolutely nothing can take the place of face to face teaching and learning and the manner in which our classes will now be taught should reflect our current situation.

Please know that our staff will continue to be Kind, Strong, and Committed during this closure. We understand that every students' situation is different and could change from week to week. It is our intention to do our best to help your student continue his/her learning while "doing no harm." We will remain committed to helping your student grow and improve his or her grade.

If you have any questions or need assistance with anything, please don't hesitate to contact the school. We will have the office staff available through phone and/or email daily from 9:00-2:00.

Thanks again for hanging in there with us during this crazy time. We WILL get through this together.

Ryan Mulvey
WVHS Principal

BE THE LIGHT -

#BeTheLightWA
On Friday night, WVHS participated in the Be The Light event to honor the Class of 2020. Schools across the state (and country) lit up their stadiums at 8:20pm (20:20 Military Time) for 20 minutes to pay homage to the class of 2020. In true WV style, the staff arrived early to make signs and decorations to let our Seniors know just how much they are loved and missed. The streets were lined with staff, some students and even neighbors to cheer on our Seniors as they drove through.

Events like this help us all realize how lucky we are to be a part of such a strong community and proud to be an Eagle.

GRADES & CREDITS -

There has been a lot of confusion and angst around grades, credits and such. Last week the State Board of Education released their emergency rules and in doing so gave school districts the ability to apply for credit waivers for the class of 2020. Waivers must be granted on an individual, case by case basis. Students/families wishing to have a graduation credit waived, will need to work with the students’ counselor through the process (again, currently this is ONLY an option for the Senior class) The West Valley School District has created guidance regarding grading options. Students will be strongly encouraged to work with their teachers to earn a letter grade in each class. We firmly believe that by earning a letter grade, each and every student will have all future opportunities available to them. Due to unforeseen circumstances, on a case by case basis, students may elect to take the class for either a Pass grade or No Credit. Although these may be options, we do not fully know the ramifications of doing so and worry that it may have a negative effect on a students future goals, including college admissions, scholarships and more. If, at anytime prior to May 29th, you and your student would like to explore this option for one or more classes, please work directly with the individual teacher.
