Weekly Letter from our Principal (Monday, April 26th)

KIND  |  STRONG  |  COMMITTED

Hello West Valley Families,

As we now move into our 2nd week of on-line teaching and learning, I'm struck by abnormality of our "new normal."  This phrase strikes me as odd, there is nothing "normal" about the situation in which we currently find ourselves.  Often while at the grocery store or a local restaurant for take-out, I'll have someone approach me and ask "how are you enjoying the early summer?"  Although this is simply an ice-breaker or joke, I want to make one thing perfectly clear, each and every single staff member at West Valley High School would rather be at school, working with our students.  We miss our kids dearly.  We miss seeing their faces, their smiles.  We miss hearing their laughter and excitement as they grasp a new learning or concept.  We miss being there to console them in the tough times and celebrate the victories.  This "new normal" is not ideal and will never be normal.

Our staff has eagerly taken on the task of teaching through the Google Classroom.  Each week they are creating new and innovative ways to meet our students educational needs.  But, no matter how amazing the lesson, no matter how creative, imaginative or engaging it may be, on-line learning will never replicate the true engagement and excitement of face to face human interaction.  I ask that you please give grace to yourself, your student and our teachers.  Moving to on-line teaching and learning is new to everyone and it will take time to adjust.  Traditionally, teachers would have months to create their courses and additional months of training in effective on-line teaching and learning strategies.  Due to the shut down, we didn't have months, we had 1 week.  That being said, I am so proud of the WV staff and students for putting forth their best effort.  Please remember this....Your best, is good enough.

If you have any questions or need assistance with anything, please don't hesitate to contact the school.  We will have the office staff available through phone and/or email daily from 10:00-2:00.

Thanks again for hanging in there with us during this crazy time.  We WILL get through this together.

Ryan Mulvey
WVHS Principal
